Girl Scout Programs

 

We are proud to offer the Girl Scout Brownies Animal badge work, as well as the Horse Fan and Rider badges for the Junior Girl Scouts.  All requirements for each of the badges can be done in one visit, with time frames and prices varying depending on which badge your Girl Scouts are looking to earn.

We are listed on the GSCNC as an approved vendor, and warmly welcome your Troop to call and discuss appointment times and options!  If you don't see a badge that you are interested in, or if you'd like to inquire about setting up a customized program for your Troop, please call us!  Note: A Liability and Hold Harmless Agreement must be submitted for each child and adult attending and is part of the packet below.

 

   

 

 

 


 

CARING FOR PETS

Learn how to care for horses, dogs, and cats, and what responsibilities we have in keeping our pets safe. Learn how to take care of an animal by feeding it, giving it fresh water, brushing it, and cleaning where it lives.

 

LEARN ABOUT ANIMAL SAFETY

Animals are pretty, especially the really big ones. But animals cannot think like you can, and sometimes they do not recognize how strong they are. They can hurt you without meaning to, so learning how to stay safe around all animals is very important.

 

LEARN ABOUT HORSES

Learn the correct names of the horse’s unique anatomy, and how this enables them to do the many jobs humans ask of them. Learn about how horse’s move and how it is different from how you move.

 

The badge will require approximately one hour to complete. Hard soled, closed-toed shoes are required and long pants recommended.

 

Prerequisites: none

Preferred minimum number of participants: 10 scouts

Cost: $20/scout (You will receive a discount of 3% if the fee is paid in cash.)

STABLE TOUR

What is involved in the everyday care of a horse? We will discuss feeding, treats, exercise, housing, and shoeing. (Badge req. #2)

 

TACK

Learn the basic parts of the saddle and the bridle, and how to care for riding equipment. (Badge req. #7)

 

RIDING ATTIRE

What do we wear when we ride, and why? What safety equipment is necessary, for the rider and the horse? (Badge req. #3)

 

OLYMPIC FREESTYLE

Video presentation of the world’s best riders in competition. (Badge req. #10)

 

HORSES THROUGH HISTORY

How have horses evolved, from prehistoric times to current breeds and their uses? Learn the correct names of the horse’s unique anatomy. (Badge req. #4)

 

CAREERS WITH HORSES

What does it take to become a veterinarian, a horse trainer, a riding instructor, or a Farrier? (Badge req. #6)

 

Badge work will require approximately 2-2 ½ hours to complete.

GROOMING

How do you properly groom a horse? What safety measures should be followed when working with a horse on the ground? (Badge req. #4)

 

TACK

What is the proper way to saddle and bridle a horse? How should the tack fit the horse? What is the only safe knot to use when tying a horse? (Badge req. #1)

 

RIDING

How do you safely mount and dismount a horse? Mounted work at a walk and trot. How do you turn and stop the horse? How to handle an emergency situation while mounted. (Badge req. #3,6)

 

OLYMPIC EQUESTRIANS

Video presentation of the world’s best riders in competition.

 

HORSE 101

Learn the correct names of the horse’s unique anatomy, and how this enables them to do the many jobs humans ask of them. Learn about common ailments, and prevention of illness. What types of equipment are used for Western riding, Eastern riding, jumping, and driving? What is involved in the care of this equipment? (Badge req. #7,2)

 

The badge will require approximately 3 hours to complete. Hard soled shoes or boots WITH A HEEL are required for mounted work.

Helmets are also required and are available to borrow at our facility.

Cost: $50/scout (You will receive a discount of 3% if the fee is paid in cash.)
